This is a personal opinion, but I feel very strongly about protein in mushrooms. I am a vegetarian, and I feel that the nutrient content of meat and seafood are incredibly different. I am a fan of mushrooms because that is a great plant-based source of protein, but I do want to get more protein in my diet. And I feel that meat is healthier for me but I do not feel that it is more nutrient dense.
It might be that one of the reasons why meat is so good for us is because it is so nutrient dense. A lot of the food we eat is rich in fat, but a good percentage of it is also chock-full of a bunch of other nutrients that are not found in meat. For example, our fat-soluble vitamins, the ones we need to stay healthy, are found in animal-based foods like chicken and fish.
I don’t know about you. But when I’m cooking, I don’t have as much time to chop, slice, dice, and mix those ingredients up. I usually end up with a bunch of meatless meat on my plate. Protein is a great nutrient for us. That’s why I’m a huge proponent of having animal-based foods on the regular. It’s hard to beat chicken and fish in terms of protein.
It seems to me that there are a lot of people trying to convince vegans that eating meat is better for them than eating mushrooms. Thats because while mushrooms contain some protein and a moderate amount of fat, they do not contain the same nutrients as meat.
Mushroom and meat are two very different products. You might argue that protein in mushrooms is a better choice because it’s less processed, but it’s because of the amount of vitamin C you get from the mushrooms. In the end, most people won’t make a decision based on anything less than the best for their health.
I always tell my clients that if they want to choose the most important factor when it comes to buying a product, it has to be the one that will give them the most value for their money.
