If insomnia has a name, it’s the inability to wake up. We don’t have the same energy, the same enthusiasm, the same motivation to go to bed, the same patience to wake up. Our brain and body are just not wired to be able to wake up.
The problem is that insomnia can get a lot worse if you’re a night owl like me. Because I’m awake a lot of the time, I also get to sleep a lot of the time. This means that my brain is constantly alert, aware, and working, and I’m not sleeping enough. I’m so busy trying to get to sleep that I don’t have time to really catch my breath.
And this makes getting to sleep a little bit tricky. If you are in bed before youre ready, then youll be awake when you roll over, and youll be waking up when you fall asleep. If you are in bed too late, then youll wake up when you hear the light or the TV, but youll be too tired to bother to get out of bed.
It’s all about priorities. We all need the same amount of sleep. We don’t need four hours. But we do need to be rested and alert. If you are consistently sleep deprived, then you are going to have a hard time maintaining your focus and ability to think clearly.
In the past, insomnia was thought to be a result of poor nutrition, lack of sleep, and/or high stress. But now we know that it is probably a result of a lack of sleep. All of us have been sleep deprived because we have not been getting the proper amount of sleep. And because we haven’t been getting enough sleep, we are less alert.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been sleep deprived for a long time. My memory is often fuzzy, and my ability to concentrate is affected by the lack of sleep I get. I’ve been trying to get back to a healthy sleep routine for a while now, but it hasn’t worked.
And the good news is that it is not just our sleep that is messed up. We are also bad at concentrating, which is why we can’t succeed in school or in life. Although as much as we complain about the lack of sleep, we probably shouldn’t be so hard on ourselves.
This is why it is so important to get enough sleep each night. When we get enough sleep every night, our body’s natural chemicals, called melatonin and serotonin, are released. These chemicals help the brain to focus, and its natural tendency to do so is the key to staying alert and focused. So if you are sleep deprived, the first thing you need to do is take a good nap.
Yes, it’s really that simple. Sleeping too late will actually make you less alert. If you’re tired during the day but not sleepy enough to sleep, you may find that you are actually more likely to be awake at night. When we are tired, our body’s natural chemicals increase our wakefulness.
I think it’s safe to say that if you are sleep deprived you are less likely to be able to concentrate on a task. While it can be helpful to have a little extra sleep, we need it to be a good quality. If you start with a bad quality nap, you may end up exhausted and unfocused.
