I’m a big fan of the book, “Why We Do Things the Way We Do them.” This book, by the MIT psychologist, Carol Dweck, is about the social, socialization, values, and beliefs that govern our behavior.
The book is so good, it makes me want to go back and reread. For example, the chapter on values in Why We Do Things the Way We Do them is very interesting. In it, Dweck talks about the value of being kind to others and the value of being a good person as opposed to what we call intrinsic values. Intrinsic values are often the things that are important to us that we can’t change, but they are valuable to others.
Dweck argues that intrinsic values are not just the things we believe in or love, but instead are the things we are good at in a given situation. We have all heard that we are good at math and that we are good at science.
The problem is that most of us are not actually good at those subjects and not even very good. We believe in them as the most important thing in life because we think they make us special. But what a person is good at is something that is not really intrinsic to them. They may only be good at math, but they are good at math because they are really good at math.
We are often made to feel that we are inherently good at something because we are so good at it. The problem is that most of our abilities are learned and that we usually find out later that we are not even good at the things we think we are. The only way to truly feel that you are good at a thing is to do it. In the case of math, we often come to believe that we are good at math because we can’t imagine that we are not.
Advertising is a profession that requires us to be both good at what we do and good at imagining that we are good at what we do. For example, if someone wanted to hire a model to advertise their business on the internet, she could try to convince herself that she is good at the job because she likes makeup and modeling.
This technique is called “modelling.” It is the act of making a mental representation of a thing. Models can be very useful in many situations. For example, the most successful models are usually the ones that have models in their life.
Models are often used for advertising that is tied to a real person, like a brand. For example, in the early days of advertising model trains were very popular, so the advertising agencies that were in production on model trains often created promotional models to advertise them. But the internet and social media have made this impossible. Instead, models act as virtual surrogates, acting as an alternative to the real people they are supposed to represent.
This is where the world of advertising gets really interesting, because there is no way to create a “model” that will look like a real person. You can use Photoshop to make “models” of real people, but that won’t always work. The only way to create a model that will show up in a Google search result is by hiring a model’s creator.
The models themselves are almost always computer generated, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that they are computer-generated images. There are many different software programs you can use to edit these computer-generated models, but the more common ones rely on real people. That creates a problem when you create a model of a real person and then use that model to appear in a Google search.
