Giyu Tomioka is a famous Japanese artist. giyu’s work is often referred to as “New Expressionism,” and giyu himself has been compared to artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and Robert Motherwell. giyu was born in Tokyo on October 10th, 1936. Giyu graduated from the University of Fine Arts at Nihon University in 1961. giyo had his first solo exhibition in 1962 when he showed paintings of animals with distorted faces that were influenced by Picasso and Francis Bacon. Giyo has had more than 20 exhibitions in Japan and giyu’s work is collected by major museums around the world.
Giyu is currently the director of giyo’s own museum, giyu Tomioka Museum.
Giyu won the prestigious Premium Imperials prize in 2001. Giyo is also an artist-in-residence at Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art and Giyu teaches painting classes for youngsters on Sundays. giyu also has giyu’s own giyshop called “Tomioka Giyu Shop” in giyo’s hometown of Tokyo.
The first solo exhibition by Tomioka was held at the Nakamura Gallery, Ginza, Japan on April 27-May 16 1962.
