Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them they control us. Whereas a person with self-awareness is able to exercise a little meta-cognition and say, “Hmm… every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas.
On the plus side, the game is in first-person, so it’s easy to see your character’s thoughts and actions in real time. On the minus side, however, the game seems to have no concept of the future, so it’s hard to tell if anything changes.
In Deathloop, you must use the new “votonity” powers to take out Visionaries and their minions. The powers are awesome, but they’re also a little… gimmicky. You can be killed by a bullet to the back of your head, or you can be hit by an arrow, or you can be hit by a sword, so theres no way you can know for sure what is going on. You still have about a 60% chance of dying, but there isnt much you can do about it.
The developers have said that the game will have a “death” mode, which will be in-game, where you can die from many different angles, but you will have about a 60% chance of dying. So you might think, why make a game that will kill me? It is because we cant really tell what the hell is going on. There is no obvious end-goal, so we dont want to get too far ahead of ourselves. All the game does is add a few side effects after the game starts up, so you can have a few more shots at the Visionaries, and if you get hit by a bullet to the back of your head, you will die.
The game can do what it wants and does not really have any sort of goal. You can die in a shooting match with a knife in your back or a heart attack from an overdose of pills. Or you can die from a crash on a ferry or a car accident. You can die from a gunshot, a stabbing, or a bullet hitting you in the head. Each has a different set of consequences.
