Stem cells are incredibly amazing. I mean, I’m not going to tell you about the countless ways in which you can use them to grow a body part or to repair your body, just to name one. But one of the most important uses I see people do is with stem cells. Stem cells are the actual cellular units that form into organs, or the ones that form into bone, or the ones that form into muscle.
In 2013, a team of scientists at Washington University in St. Louis used stem cells to grow an artificial muscle on a 3-D printer. They did this by following certain procedures to grow a new muscle cell, but the resulting muscle was tiny and highly specialized. Since then, scientists have developed a variety of techniques to make even smaller artificial muscles to help soldiers fight their wars.
It’s been years since the original creation of a stem cell, and there are still some tricks that scientists are still figuring out. But so far, the only things that have been made are a few lines of artificial muscles, and that’s just the start.
It’s a nice to look at, and in the video a scientist says it’s a good way to make tiny artificial muscles.
