Roberts on November 26th, 1973 as an outgrowth of American Television & Communications Corporation (ATC). The first channel launched by this company was called “The Nashville Network” or “TN”.

The company is currently headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut. It was originally founded by Bob Magness and Red McCombs to distribute satellite television services through cable TV operators that would give them an alternative to the established cable industry controlled by HBO and Showtime. The new service became known as ‘Star Cable’ joining other competitors including Ted Turner’s channel WTBS, but the company’s goal in response to Ted Turner was for Star Cable to be “the next HBO”.

The company now knew that it had to be more than just cable TV and in 1985 it bought out HBO, followed by Showtime two years later. Star Channel was renamed ‘Cablevision Systems Corporation’ when the spectrum network of stations were spun off from Cablevision Technology Company to become its own entity with a new name: “Star Broadcasting”.

In 1982, the new service became known as ‘Star Channel’, adding other channels such as those from Viacom.
