This is the nickname given to an injury to the knee of someone with cartilage, usually from a high-impact sport.
This is a case of the knee hurting a lot, but also a case of the knee itself hurting a lot. This is a case of the knee being a large organ, and the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) of the knee that attaches to the kneecap is damaged, resulting in cartilage being forced out of the joint and into the bone, giving the knee a large spur of cartilage on its side.
In a case like this, the knee itself is the problem, not the ACL or the meniscus. We can’t just leave the knee alone, and so the knee is first evaluated by the doctor. The doctor will use a variety of tests, including x-rays, to determine the severity of the cartilage problem and make a diagnosis.
X-rays can show damaged bone to the bone, but it doesn’t show cartilage. But in some cases the cartilage can be damaged, and it doesn’t show up on a x-ray.
Once the doctors diagnose the cartilage problem, they can then treat the cartilage themselves. This involves cutting, shaving, or otherwise removing the cartilage from the knee. This can help prevent further damage, but also keep you from having to wear bandages or prosthetics. But you would be surprised by the number of knees that dont have full thickness cartilage. Most knees are like this, but the cartilage on the smaller, younger knees is worse.
The Meniscus-Trial is an interesting experiment. We have so much information about how the knee works that it’s easy to conclude that it doesn’t work properly. This is true in part because we all think of the knee as one gigantic muscle, so any injury to a knee causes an injury to the whole body—in addition to the injury to the knee.

We are all aware that the knee is one big muscle, but few realize how much it interferes with the body’s function. This is one of those areas that I think needs to be studied more closely.
