Eating disorders are often seen as a male issue. However, the female athlete phenomenon has been found to be more prevalent among female athletes than male ones. The reason for this is complex, but it boils down to the fact a woman is more likely to be “stressed” from the normal daily demands of her job.
According to the National Eating Disorders Association, it’s estimated that eating disorders affect approximately 20% of women and 11% of men. In addition, it’s been reported that between 10% and 20% of adolescent girls have an eating disorder and are still struggling to make that transition from being a “normal” teenager into a woman.
The thing is, eating disorders don’t usually strike women alone. There are many factors that lead to an eating disorder in the first place, but two of the most common are stress and poor nutrition. So when a woman is stressed from the normal demands of her job, she’s more likely to eat unhealthy foods. While eating disorders are usually a female disorder, there are also men affected by eating disorders who are male as well.
Of course, the biggest issue is that there are many more male sufferers than women. I’ve seen research that claims that the incidence of eating disorders in men is about three to four times that in women. This isnt to say that men do not suffer, but when they do, they do it more often and in more severe cases. One of the reasons that women who suffer from eating disorders are often women who have been abused, is because they come from a very damaged home.
It also seems to me that it’s not just eating disorders that are more common in women, but depression, PTSD, and alcoholism. The reason that it’s more common in women is because they are more likely to have a family history of mental illness, and as a result they have a greater need to deal with these things in a healthy manner.
I think that maybe the most notable aspect of eating disorders is that they are more common in women, but this is one of those things you can only really get an idea of if you see it. A friend who had an eating disorder told me that she would have been better off if she didn’t get bullied in school. For me, it’s just a matter of reading between the lines of what people are saying about their eating disorder.
Eating disorders are more common in women. The reason for this, I believe, is that women are more likely to be victims of bullying than men. In the same way that a child who has been teased will do well to seek help, a woman who is a victim of bullying will not.
Not all girls are victims of bullying. In fact, most of them are not. That’s why it’s important to look at what people are saying about their eating disorder. Often, the very thing that could help a girl get better is the very thing that makes her a victim of bullying. I’ll give you an example. People will often tell me that eating disorder sufferers are the ones who “get better”.
However, some women are also more likely to become victims of bullying, such as those who are bullied in their sports and/or in the classroom. But you have to understand that not all women are bullied in sports. Sometimes, bullies just want to hurt girls. They may even try to hurt girls who are bullied as well.
There are certain kinds of bullying that are worse than others, but every girl is vulnerable. Some kids who are bullied in school are also bullied in the classroom because it’s easier to bully girls than boys. It’s the boys who get bullied by adults, not the girls. So it isn’t necessarily that eating disorder sufferers are the only ones getting better, but it is something to think about.
