In this week’s news, the tsunami’s death toll in Indonesia is rising, and the death toll from the earthquake in Japan is also increasing. The death toll from the two earthquakes in Indonesia is already at about 3,000, and for the Japan earthquake, the death toll will likely be higher. I really can’t wait for all of the news to come in, and I’m sure that I’ll be hearing it in the next few days.
A news article reports that the tsunami in Indonesia is being called the world’s largest, and it’s due to be the number one killer of people worldwide. You can read the article at the link here, and in a subsequent link we get to see the images for the tsunami that’s coming this December. You can view the images yourself here. It’s a really cool visualisation of the tsunami’s effects.
It’s being said that Indonesia is becoming a big hotspot for tsunamis, and we are no exception. A couple of weeks ago, there were some 5,000 people lost in Indonesia, and this may be the biggest one of them all. Here’s a video of the tsunami that hit Indonesia in December 2008, the one that killed close to 200,000 people.
Indonesia has been hit by waves of tsunami in the past. In fact, two of those massive waves struck in the same year, in Banda Aceh in Indonesia.
The tsunami that struck off the coast of Indonesia was the strongest ever recorded. It was a combination of two waves that had been building up for a while, and each managed to create waves that were greater than the other. In the video below you can see what it looks like when a huge wave hits a small piece of land.
The two waves were caused by a volcanic explosion in the sea. And these waves were caused by something quite different. The wave that struck Indonesia was caused by the tsunami that slammed into the remote Indonesian island of Simeulue, which has been slowly sinking ever since. Simeulue’s been sinking for a while now, which is why the tsunami struck there.
The tsunami struck Simeulue because the volcano that had caused the tsunami was still in active eruption. It had been dormant for over a year and was causing massive amounts of ash (and gas) to fall into the ocean. The eruption was at its peak a few years ago, but now that the volcano is inactive there is little to no way that it will erupt again. In fact, the eruption could produce a devastating tsunami which would devastate a large part of the country.
As it turns out, the tsunami in Simeulue was a direct result of the volcano. The volcano was dormant for years and just recently erupted. Just as the volcano had been dormant for a long time, and just recently erupted, the tsunami had started building up.
The tsunami is still not confirmed to have been caused by the volcano, but there is a chance that it could be. It is also not a good idea to build a new water source on top of a dormant volcano because the volcano may erupt again in the future.
It was a huge, huge disaster that took hundreds of lives and destroyed an area the size of Delaware. But it also took the life of the volcano, which it is now a geological landmark thanks to a few of the locals digging up the lava to take away.
