We talked with a lot of people about rail travel recently. The fact is that there are several different types of rail system in the U.S. and it’s easy to get confused and/or frustrated if you try to take a train from one end to another. We asked the folks at Amtrak (the American train company) if they would be willing to train us all on a specific type of train in order to help us avoid this headache. And they did.
Amtrak has agreed to train all of us on regional rail. It’s called the Inter-city passenger train and it’s a very efficient method of travel. It’s also known as “the train” because of its popularity. We talked to a representative from Amtrak, and he said the training would cover us, our families, and anyone else who might be interested in traveling on the system.
Amtrak is the largest commuter rail system in the US, with more than 11,000 routes. It’s the third biggest carrier of passengers travelling in the US after the airlines and the trucker. They also run a lot of express services and a few commuter lines. Amtrak has built up a huge network of stations for its routes, and they’re all located right here in the city of Atlanta.
The main problem is that Amtrak’s network isn’t all that dense. So the trains that make their way into Atlanta travel into places such as Atlanta, GA, and then head out of Atlanta and on to other destinations. That means the trains that travel between Atlanta and other places in the USA are traveling on the Georgia side of the border. Amtrak could easily build a system that had more train stations in the USA, but it doesn’t.
This is a problem that the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce has worked to fix, in that Amtrak is currently building out an extension of the existing network that would extend it to places like Chattanooga, TN. The expansion cost is estimated at $100 million, and the current plan is to begin construction shortly. This expansion will add a total of 6 new stations, and 5 new stations are expected to be built in the next three years.
This has been a long time coming, but this means that Amtrak looks to be a very strong contender for the national rail system. With the new extensions to the existing East Coast, Northeast and Midwest lines, these new stations will help to add another half-dozen stops to the system. The expansion has the potential to be a significant boost to the economy of the region, but more importantly it could mean that Amtrak could be a significant player in the regional rail market.
Amtrak is one of the largest private railroad operators in the U.S., serving more than 300 trains each day. It’s also one of the largest landowners in the country, owning about 8% of the entire Northeast Corridor network. It’s a key part of the region’s economy and a major employer of people who live in Northeast Corridor communities.
According to the Northeast Corridor Coalition, Amtrak is “one of the largest private railroad operators in the U.S., serving more than 300 trains each day.” This is a problem because Amtrak has huge subsidies from the federal government to operate its trains. In return, the government is expected to help Amtrak with the financing of its operations, as well as providing funds for the construction of new tracks. However, the federal government is far from being able to provide funding for all of Amtrak’s services.
As you may have heard, Amtrak is facing a funding dispute with the federal government over the financing for the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak says that funding for the entire Northeast Corridor is not needed, but the federal government says it should have enough money to run the entire system, and if that’s not forthcoming, Amtrak might have to call in the loans again. This is why Amtrak is planning to build a new bridge over the Potomac River to service Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor.
