I love when I work with other remodeling contractors. Together we can make the most of a project while achieving our goals.
In the past, we’ve worked with our clients to help them create a new home. We’ve helped them select a new home, plan their renovation, and take advantage of the many design options to help them find the perfect fit. While the home-buying process and renovations are all fun, the same cannot be said for the construction process. As soon as a home is being built, our client’s are no longer able to talk about the design process.
The biggest challenge we have in creating a good design for a new construction home is making sure the design is what the client wants. Unfortunately, the majority of our clients are not familiar with the process of the project, so the design process is a lot about guessing and being surprised.
The home-buying process is just as confusing as any other process. Although a large majority of our clients seem to have a grasp on what they want to do, others are completely clueless and have to spend the first months of the construction process looking to see if their “dream” home is really what they want. Some clients have even gone as far as to tell us that they are only doing it because they have to do it for their family.
I think it’s important for people with design jobs to be open and honest with the team because the first thing they feel when they’re hired for a job is that they’ve been hired by someone who is not good at designing. But that is not the case with anyone I’ve ever hired. I’ve found that the key to success is to be honest and forthright with the client and not to get caught up in the process.
When I was in design school, one thing I did not learn is to treat a client like an equal. I think that is one of the first things that a designer should learn as a designer. When you are dealing with a client, you have to understand their point of view, and if you don’t, you can get yourself in a lot of trouble. And if you don’t, you can end up spending much of your time arguing with people who believe something very different from yours.
And that, my friends, is how you end up becoming a designer today.
I think that a lot of designers these days are going to be the kind of people who are going to be so dismissive of each other. They are going to see a lot of people who look like they have the wrong things in their boxes and go, “This is not the way I imagined that would be done.” If you are in this mentality, you are going to make mistakes. You are going to say things you are not really sure about.
You’re right, and I would also say that this is the perfect time to do something about it. It is time for a renaissance in what we can do as designers. You probably already have a job you like and are enjoying it. Now is the time to explore the world you want to pursue. There are a lot of opportunities out there for the designer that are not available to you right now.
That being said, I have been saying for a while now that I love my job. I love the fact that I am able to do what I love and also that there are a lot of companies doing great things when it comes to design. I have always thought the right job for me was that of a designer, particularly one that I could use my imagination and creativity to express. But I am having a hard time finding this right now.
