Over the weekend, I watched a movie with a really good storyline that I’d like to share with you. It was a movie out in 2000, but it had Marisa Tomei in it, who I like, and reading the synopsis intrigued me. It was listed as a comedy, and Marisa Tomei played a girl named Ruby Weaver who, like most single girls today, had a string of failed relationships behind her. Some of the funnier scenes were of Ruby and her BFF Gretchen talking about a few of their ex-boyfriends and what eventually went wrong. Every time Ruby got involved with a guy who she thought had potential, inevitably the other shoe would drop, and there would be something about him that was odd or strange that would derail the whole relationship. Ruby also realized she was what her therapist called an “enabler”, meaning that she seemed to pick out guys that had something wrong with them and she would try to fix them. Which, of course, never worked. In walks Sam Deed, played by Vincent D’Onofrio. Would he be different? Oh “different” is a good choice of word here.
At first, Sam seemed like a breath of fresh air. He was cute, funny, sweet, and seemed very interested in Ruby. Ruby was nervous at first though, but soon succumbed to his charm. She felt she was finally in a real healthy relationship. Why shouldn’t he be The One, right? He seemed so ….. normal. That is until he told her he was from the future. The year 2470 to be exact. He said he was a “back traveler”.
Most girls would have run for the hills at this point, but Ruby was already in love with Sam, so she allowed herself to be in a total state of denial. She pretended that they were just role playing, but eventually even she couldn’t deny his idiosyncrasies and peculiarities. Like any girl in her situation, Ruby started doing a little digging around into Sam’s past to see what she could find out. Ruby also talked to her therapist about the situation. Her therapist was played by the very funny Holland Taylor, who plays Charlie Sheen’s mother in Two & A Half Men. Ruby’s therapist wants to talk to Sam in private.
The storyline reminded me of another movie way back when called Starman that starred Jeff Bridges. But while watching Happy Accidents, you were never quite sure if Sam Deed really was a displaced time traveler who came here for Ruby, or if he was just another lovable lunatic who Ruby had the misfortune of running into and then falling in love with.
If you pay close attention, there are little clues woven all throughout the movie that you only realize were there until you see the ending. It was fun watching the range of emotions that Ruby had while trying to decipher what and who Sam Deed really was. While taking this ride with Ruby on her quest to see if Sam was the man of her dreams, we were just as confused as she was. One minute we were actually starting to believe Sam’s incredible story about traveling back in time, but then the next moment we were sure that he was just a charming fruitcake who had a major problem.
Surprisingly, a very tense and heart stopping scene at the end of the movie has you holding your breath to see what will happen. But at least Ruby, and us, will finally get our answers.
