Michael Afton: educator, speaker, and principal of make-school

Michael Afton is the principal and founder of Make School in San Francisco. He has 15 years of experience in education. Before founding Michael Afton, Michael worked for 6 years as a teacher at the International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT) where he taught both undergraduate and graduate courses on interaction design, entrepreneurship, business fundamentals, user experience design, programming with HTML/CSS/JavaScript/Python. Michael also served as IADT’s Vice President for Entrepreneurship & Innovation before leaving to found Make School. Michael has been an educator, entrepreneur and speaker since 2006 in the fields of design thinking, entrepreneurship, innovation strategy and leadership development for both children and adults.

Michael Afton is a principal who founded Michael Afton with 15 years of experience working in education. He serves as the vice president at International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT) teaching undergraduate courses on interaction design and graduate level courses on business fundamentals and user-experience design. In 2012 he left his position at IADT to start up MAKE SCHOOL which Michael now leads as its principal.

In the time since he left IADT, Michael has continued to work as an educator, entrepreneur and speaker in design thinking, entrepreneurship innovation strategy and leadership development for both children and adults.

After leaving IADT, Michael founded MAKE SCHOOL which now serves as his main focus. As its leader, he’s helped develop curriculum based around learning through making that includes studio classes about interactive media art such as game development or physical computing alongside traditional academic subjects like math or English Language Arts .

In 2012 Michael left his position at International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT) to start up Make School after serving as its VP for Entrepreneurship & Innovation since 2009. Today Michael leads make school as its principal and is responsible for overseeing a wide range of initiatives related to entrepreneurship including advising on new business models to developing ideas around strategic innovation workshops.
